The Phantom Of The Opera San Jose Theatre reviews
A great performance constrained by the venue
Phantom of the Opera is an amazing story. Seeing it performed live is something every theater buff should experience. The cast was great, the acting superb, and the music performance phenomenal. The performance itself was every bit as good as when I saw Phantom performed at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago. Unfortunately, I cannot say such great things about Uihlein Hall at the Marcus Center. To begin with the stage itself was far too small for a production the magnitude of Phantom. The stage always looked crowded and the performers seemed to be limited in their movements by the small size of the stage. Due to the small stage the set team had to get real creative with how they designed the sets and completed set changes. I have to give them credit for doing an outstanding job with the sets and set changes (the rotating sets were certainly creative), but due to the limited space some of the sets were really hard to see the detail and some of the sets really did not help communicate what was happening in the scene. If you did not already know the story you might not understand where certain things were taking place. Most notably, was the scene between Christine and Raoul on the roof of the opera house. If you did not know the they were supposed to be on the roof, the set did not help communicate that. They could have been in a park anywhere. Also, the scene where Christine visits the grave of her father, appeared to just be a monument of some kind in the town center, not a grave in a graveyard. Granted, these are not deal killers especially if you know the story but were this your first time you might not have understood. Aside from that, the seating at the venue was not great. I get it, they never make the seats really comfortable, but to have rows that were ~50-60 seats long with no aisles made getting in and out difficult. The balcony seats were also so high up that those seated in the balcony were actually seated above the chandelier. Finally, parking at the venue was not great. The parking garage only had one entrance and exit. We had no issues getting in, but it took forever to get out. Were I ever to attend another event in at this venue I would not park in the attached garage, although the heated skyway connecting the garage to the auditorium was certainly a nice touch on a cold evening. Overall, I enjoyed the performance immensely, but found the venue constraining to the performance. I was also dismayed by the fact that almost no one was dressed properly for an evening at the opera. The majority of those in attendance were wearing jeans and t-shirts, I even saw sweats on a few people. I would consider a suit and tie/dress or skirt to be the minimum acceptable standard for an evening performance at the theater/opera, apparently that is not the case at the Marcus Center.
